Sugar, spice and all things nice, these are the ingredients that make up Fashion Design and Marketing student João Machado from Portugal. It’s a collection of ‘ruffles, bows and everything I love’ transposed from his own state of mind into texture and technicolour. However, this wonderland is not insusceptible to his own dark thoughts, and it’s this rich melancholy that gravitate his garments from initial musings to an epic saga. From Cristobal Balenciaga to Harry Clarke, each garment represents a narrative only open eyes and an open mind can unwrap. Ripped silk and satin ribbons, glimmering midnight brocades and earthy screen prints compliment dresses of regal design. Before coming to London, he studied Technical Fashion Design at Escola Superior de Artes e Design. He’s interned for designers Bottega Veneta, Acne Studios and Craig Green. Joao always thinks pink. ‘Ruffles, bows and everything I love.’
