Yasmina Atta is a 23 year old Nigerian designer and recent graduate of Central Saint Martins’ Womenswear pathway. Her work explores ideas of mysticism and subverting ideas of the future. For her degree collection, she was inspired by the surreal through exploring the idea of the hybrid persona, drawing inspiration from African cinema, in particular the work of Djibril Diop Mambéty. The collection is about combining the ancient with the modern. Atta used laser etching, motorised accessories and the software blender to create pattern pieces. These more modern techniques are contrasted with traditional materials to combine and contrast new and old into one. ‘The film presented is a glimpse into the world of this character who is ever-shifting and transforming.’ Moving forward Atta is looking to continue working on her final pieces for the collection and although nervous about the future she is hopeful.
