‘I was looking for escape myself,’ explains 25 year old Sofia Tureková, her graduate Womenswear collection taking inspiration from her daily walks while in lockdown in Slovakia. Elaborating on the idea that house plants reaching towards the outside world from windows and the stillness of lace curtains were a significant part of her concept. Undertaking a bobbin lace making course, Tureková expresses how therapeutic this part of the process has been. Using herself as her mannequin she focused on the raw personal narrative as she lived through it. Emphasising the craftsmanship of lacemaking, order brings her a great deal of fulfilment, ‘something that is loose like a thread, it gave me satisfaction to place it in a structure.’

Confidently explaining that teaching herself how to sail helped the collection take direction based upon The Divided Self by R.D. Laing, rationalising the two parts of a human, the false ‘sane’ and the ‘authentic.’ The ‘authentic self’ takes form in wearable sculpture, contrasting colour and performance, referencing Tureková’s past as a dancer.

Tureková has also interned at Christopher Kane for design and at the atelier in 2020. Tureková explains that she just wants to continue her craft. ‘I’m up for any challenge.’
