‘My work is often about telling a fairytale or cult story,’ remarks Central Saint Martins graduate Oscar Ouyang. In a time of near dystopia, escapism is craved by all, and what better form of escapism than through the means of the fictional and fantastical. Inspired by their favourite animation, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, wind and movement became a focal part of Ouyang’s collection.

Finding further inspiration from the futuristic, kinetic sculptures of Anthony Howe, Ouyang infuses a myriad of textures and shapes within their designs, mixing knitwear with modern materials. A strong focus on craftsmanship led to internship opportunities with brands like Proenza Schouler, Ludovic de Saint Sernin and Charlotte Knowles, something Ouyang credits as inspirational with hopes to gain more experience within the luxury industry.

The fascinating young designer hopes to continue their studies at the University – earning a Masters in fashion design – which would lead to a potential namesake design house. The foundations of a thriving business are evident when in discussion with Ouyang, as although their vision explores elements of the fantastical, they are aware of their customer base, ‘I have my own signature knitwear, which is the combination of elastic and monofilament yarn knit.’
